ARC Review : Avenger Book 2 in the Sanctuary Series
Avenger is an aptly name for such a compelling piece of art. This book has fantastical written all over it.
Mr. Robert J. Crane is a superb writer of the fantasy genre, but I also think he could write in many other genres including comedy and mystery, because he is able to bring all of those themes to us in this series.
In the second book of the series, Sanctuary, Avenger takes place after our hero, Cyrus, has lost a dear friend. He is still upset by this and begins having nightmares because he hasn't avenged his friend.
Most of the characters from the first book are back; our beloved elves, the dark elves that entice us in many ways, and even some of the characters that got on our nerves too.
But this is what makes this book so good. I absolutely love how each book starts out with a Prologue, where our hero, Cyrus , remembers back to certain times. It is almost sad because I sit and wonder what has happened for him to be in the deserted halls? I guess I will just have to continue in this series to find out...
The writing draws you in from the first sentence. It is so rich with prose, describing scenes to the point I feel like I am really there, enjoying the conversations everyone is having. The story line flows very smoothly and the dialogue is very impressive. Some of the wisecracks that the characters are throwing back at each other makes me think of my friends and me as well.
I think what we should take from this story is that: yes, it is based in a world where there are elves, dragons, trolls, goblins, wizards, and even rock giants. But some of the lessons that Cyrus and the other characters learn through the story, are also life lessons, we as humans can learn even in this day and age.
Also there isn't much cursing in these books and there are only a few sexual innuendos here and there, that actually make the story even more exciting. I like the flirting that goes between the characters and I also love the jokes that all of the characters can make toward each other. Makes me think of myself some.
I really don't see anything wrong with this book. Ever since I was little, I was always in love with the fair knights saving the damsel in distress scenario, with dragons, and wizards. And of course elves. Elves Rock!
I am a huge fan of J.R.R Tolkien and Terry Goodkind and I seriously believe that these books, Defender and Avenger, could be another classic in the fantasy genre. It is like my birthday when I find a series that I am literally biting my nails waiting on the next books to come out.
I would encourage anyone wanting to get into a Series that has all of the races that come together to make an excellent fantasy book, to definitely go out and get the Sanctuary series.
